Mucrospirifer sp. is a genus of extinct brachiopods that are often referenced as "butterfly shells" due to their wing-like appearance. They lived during the middle of the Devonian Period, roughly 400 million years ago. These little creatures have been discovered all over the world except Australia and Antarctica. Research says they likely lived in muddy marine sediments and were exclusive filter feeders.
