Fire Agate is considered the rarest of all colors gemstones when found in true gem quality, beating out diamonds, emeralds, and rubies. So far it has only been found in a very select few parts of North America including Mexico, and some southwestern states such as New Mexico, Arizona, and California. This is likely due to high volcanic activity in these areas dating 24 to 36 million years ago. Fire agate is a form of chalcedony that contains colorful iron oxide minerals such as goethite that give the mineral a play of color or "fire" when viewed correctly. This shimmering effect is known as the Schiller Effect. These colors are typically different hues of red, orange, yellow, and green. The most sought-after are the rare blues and purples.
