Alexandrite is a beryllium, aluminum oxide mineral, and is named after a former czar, Alexander II. Many refer to this gem as an "emerald by day, and a ruby by night". This mineral is a variety of chrysoberyl that changes colors depending on the light it is in (please see the photos of an example). It was originally discovered in Russia during the 1830s but has since been found in many other locations. The color of this stone depends on its content of chromium. Since natural alexandrite is extremely rare, it is common for stones used in jewelry to be grown in a laboratory. It is also the national stone of Russia.

Alexandrite is believed to be a stone of good fortune. You are certainly fortunate if you own one straight from the earth. It is said to bring good health when recovering from illness and encourages you to follow your heart.
